SCHOOL OF DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY

This program combines knowledge and advanced technological equipment to produce images of the body. The diagnostic medical ultrasonographer works with medical practitioners in the management, control and care of patients referred for ultrasound studies providing extended information.Diagnostic medical sonographers use special equipment to direct high frequency sound waves into areas of the patient's body. Sonographers operate the equipment, which collects reflected echoes and forms an image that may be videotaped, transmitted, or photographed for interpretation and diagnosis by a physician.

Employment Opportunities

Upon completion of the Ultrasound Program,our graduates may find employment in areas such as hospitals, physicians’ offices, Imaging laboratories and commercial companies. Job opportunities should be favorable. In addition to job openings from growth, some openings will arise from the need to replace sonographers who retire or leave the occupation permanently. However, job opportunities will vary by geographic area. Sonographers willing to relocate will have the best job opportunities. Sonographers with multiple specialties or multiple credentials also will have good prospects.

Program Description

Medical Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to demonstrate body parts and assist physicians in the diagnosis of medical abnormalities. The sonographer must have a complete understanding of human anatomy and a skilled, creative, self-directed approach for locating and demonstrating anatomy and pathology.
